This is a Murphy that was completed in August 2010. This is my favorite designs to incorporate a folding desk. I call it the Smithsonian after the name of first customer I built it for, the smith’s. The desk in this one is not just something that is attached to the front it is incorporated into the design. Parts of it even fold into the inner frame. So when closed it doesn’t look like an accident, but a cabinet that doesn’t look like either a desk or a bed.
The bookcases added onto this one are 24” wide and feature solid door on one side and a glass grid style door on the other.
Wood type: Maple
Stain: Golden Birch
Finish: Medium sheen Pre-Catalyzed Lacquer

I had the plans for my Alpine and then alter them to come up with my other style. Most of the ideas come from customers. I just make it happen.

Neil, Do you use yours everyday or is it in a guest room? Did you build it yourself?

Chris:
Guest bedroom.
Heck, no. It was a few years ago … when … though I could appreciate good woodworking … I couldn’t DO it, myself.
Now that I’ve been at it a while … I STILL couldn’t build this sucker ;-)
It’s solid oak. I’ve been known to take my morning coffee into that room, and just admire it.
Bought it in San Diego, from the Murphy Bed dealer, there.

Chris,
All of your work is really outstanding. The incorporated desk is a great idea, but I’d have it too cluttered for my guests to get to bed before it was time to put the bed back and set up the desk again! ;-)

It sounds like my girls murphy beds. They can’t close them because of the junk on the bed. When they do get them close, they can’t put it back down because of the stuff on the floor.
