A black, rusty ‘60s mailbox – that was all that remained untouched after a 3-year renovation of the front porch of our Craftsman home. Damned if it was going back up. Not after personally tearing down the old 10’ x 40’ porch. Not after laying flooring. Not after rebuilding 10 columns and creating 37’ of railing from scratch.

I needed a last touch, a centerpiece by the front door for all that work. The design had to echo and complement the Craftsmen style of the rebuilt porch.

The cylinder is formed from 12, 14” x 2 1/2” strips beveled at 15 degrees. It was cut in two above the center line to form a deeper well for mail and shallow lid. A finger ring was dadoed in. The plaque is 12” W x 24”L. The length of the support arm and placement of the lid prop were determined by experimentation

The mailbox is red oak, finished in Minwax red oak stain with three coats of Minwax satin poly.

Oh, that there dodecagonal bit? I ain’t that smart. I had to look her up on the Internet. And the next time someone asks, “How are you?” Tell ‘em you’re feeling, “Just dodecagonal.”

I didn’t look up dodecadonal ‘yet ’ but after ogling this outstanding project I can say with certainty that I feel inadequate.

This old math teacher knew what it was from the start. Well done. I like the finish and the rosette at top. In my limited knowledge of the craftsman style this should complement your house.

This is a really great build, very impressive. The design is beautiful, very much in line with your desired Craftsman style.

A very good looking mailbox. Very nicely done, and it should last a good long while.

Possibly the coolest mailbox I have seen. Definitely the coolest Ho Made mailbox I have ever seen. Nice job

Thanks for sharing, and Congrats on your 3.

Dodecagonal. Heck just try to say it 3 times really fast, you’ll break something.

Great looking mailbox DLP.

But on your front porch? I’m lucky to have my postie throw things over the fence.. and occasionally he actually gets the right fence… my fence!
