Tackle Box

I made this tackle box to be given away as a prize for the biggest fish caught for our upcoming guys weekend fishing trip. Last year I made a knife with a wood sheath and the guys thought it was a great prize. This year I hope they enjoy the tackle box.

It is made from a log from a Tree of Heaven that I received from another LJ Tim387. Thanks Tim. I was surprised how nice this wood is. The top center and border is Rosewood. It’s 12’’ wide x 6’’ x 6’’. The top also has a raised panel with the border. Mitered corner with rosewood splines. The tray is made from Ash with Lexan dividers and bottom to protect from the elements. Finished with spar varnish.
Last years biggest fish was a 27lb catfish caught by me. LOL. But, I was not included in the prize. My buddy won with a 14lb cat. Not a bad fish to win with.

Thanks for looking.

That is a fine looking tackle box that will be a great prize for biggest fish. Maybe you can make some wooden lures or bobbers too?

Nice choice of woods. I’m not familiar with “tree of heaven” is is domestic or exotic? I assume that is what the sides are?

Just to keep me honest, I will post a picture of last years 14 pound winner and my 27 pounder. I was very proud of myself. I didn’tneed to win a prize. The fish was the prize. Haha

Thanks ralbuck.

Hi Earl. Tree of heaven is a domestic tree and it is considered invasive. They grow anywhere. I heard of it but never knew what the wood looked like. I will be on the lookout for more of it now.

Thanks Dave.

Hi Tony. My friends do like the things I build and this is a cool way to share some of them. Plus it adds excitment to the trip. You told me you’re not much of a fishermen but maybe you could use it as a feed box for alligators when they show up in the pond. LOL.

Your right Dave… you would have to teach me how to fish. And Wow! I think that fish your holding could kick an alligators butt. LOL!

Nice looking box. I had never heard of “Tree of Heaven” either, but there is plenty about them online. Including several sites that will sell you trees to grow. Upwards of 55’ at maturity. I thought darn that board looked pretty wide for a Skunk tree, just mature. If people view it as invasive, and a pest you wonder how many are allowed to reach maturity.

One site said they stink too, did the lumber have an odor?

Thanks for posting, a learning thread.

You’ll have to post the winner when it happens!!

Cheers, Jim

Hi Tom.There are handles on my tackle boxes and attache cases. LOL.

Tony, catching that catfish kicked my butt. I was using 8# test mono filament line and had to take my time. The battle lasted close to 30 minutes. I needed a couple drinks after that. LOL.

Hi Steve. I remember seeing a lot of those trees as a kid growing up in Chicago. You don’t see them much in residential areas now but if you go to a wooded area you will see plenty. My neighbor 2 doors down has one, I would like to go cut it down. And it’s huge. Haha

Thanks Jim. It’s made of wood so we can take it on the boat too. LOL. I’ll have to remember to post the winner.

Thanks Hoss.

Thanks Jerry. It may not be something you use allthe time but it will make a great conversational piece.
