I made a new garden fence/gate for my moms birthday. She requested it have access for her kitties. CAT PORTS! There are 2 cat ports. on on the right and a secondary of the left that is mostly covered my bushes in the summer LEFT. The posts are treated pine buried very deep and set in concrete. Everything else is #2 construction pine. This was on the CHEAP! the fence slats are 2×4s that I ripped width wise so they are a little less than 3/4 thick.

I watched a few videos of Norm from this old house on youtube make an arched gate top which I emulated. for the arch I took 2 2×4s and squared them up, biscuited them side by side so they were @ 6 inches wide. Made a 3 piece arch with 1/2 inch wide one inch deep tenon cuts on the ends used tightbond 3 on everything used my bandsaw to cut them out and here is the results.

Its rained everyday since I started this run away project so the completion time have been dragged out and I have to get to so real work for now which leaves me some time to tick about the GATE.

I want some input on my gate. At first I was going to have a ONE PIECE gate with simple hinges and a latch lock on the other side with a long spring to pull it shut. BUT I think the weight of the gate slamming shut would be too much. I was thinking of these double swing self closing hinges that allow open in both directions sort of like a old salon door sort of setup. BUT they are pricey…

Any suggestions? on the operation and or style of the gate.

Extremely attractive, I really like the design, but if I were to build something like that here, it wouldn’t last more than a year or two. Even 3/4” cedar doesn’t last very long.
