This carving is from a Gary Falin rough out that I started last October at the week-long Renegade Woodcarvers Rendezvous in Lebanon, TN. You carve with a different instructor each day and it is a lot of fun. Steve Brown of the Caricature Carvers of America organizes this event each October and March and has a lot of excellent instructors for each event. I usually complete mine pretty quickly, but I drug my feet a bit on this one. It was a lot of fun to carve and paint. Thanks for looking!

Great Job,

You need to live in the west a while to appreciate the accuracy of this carving. I have seen this guy; or maybe his brother; all over from Nebraska, the Dakotas, Montana, and the rest of the western USA too.

That is exactly the thought that got me started carving! There are lots of resources online, in videos, and with books and magazines and possibly even carvers or a club near you. Start with sharp tools and easy to carve wood, and a little safety equipment and give it a shot! There are many styles and methods of carving and try to measure your success by how much you enjoy doing it.

That little guy is a perfect cowpoke. He’s been places, and seen things. Lotta miles on his frame, and you captured that perfectly.

Thank much for posting, and congrats on a well deserved 3

Do you go to every one of those carve in’s? Sounds like a great deal.

I have only been to three in Lebanon. but many people attend every one (you have to sign up early to get a spot). But I’ve attended quite a few other seminars in Arkansas and Missouri. I was able to learn things from instructors and other carvers that you just can’t get in a magazine or a video. You get immediate feedback and corrections and it is really inexpensive to take a class with some of the best carvers in the world.
