I needed to relax with a little lathe time..the elves needed a break from sawing so I laid up another goblet. This one was almost scrapped but I wanted to finish it to test out my idea for the captive rings …. these are for you Brian ( Bushmaster!!!) you Asked !!

This was made from 25 pieces but I laid them up wrong when gluing. I was gluing each side of the flat assemblies and got them out of order. I was going to throw it away and start over but I band sawed them apart( lost a little wood) and glued them up in the right order. The inner shape was a rectangle instead of a square, but it worked out okay. They are made from mahogany ( outer), cedar ( middle) and the center is pistachio..but the 2 rings are walnut!!!

The goblet is 2 1/2” x 7 1/2” high. The base was turned with 2 diameters to accept the rings to lay flat. It is finished with EEE and Shellawax.

Cheers, Jim

Here is the layout method to get the walnut in the rings but not in the body:

Good work Jim, two nice projects. I think I’ll have to make a few rattles soon.

I like it. That’s a neat idea to get a different wood for the ring. I may have to put on my thinking cap to follow this one. Well done Jim.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

Cool idea on the glue-up! I may have to borrow that idea.
