Hi Leith,they are Tibetan Artists. The spelling varies.They paint on a stretched canvas that looks as if it were a skin on a drying frame.Very intricate sometimes using a brush with only a couple of hairs.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thangka
They traditionally painted for both education and spiritual.

Thanks Mads,yes to stand on as well, hence the thick plywood.The board at the side is a slip in front with a rest for paper.The bottom drawer is going to be with layers for brushes.i don’t take a picture of it closed as when she gets back from Germany she is going to paint the exterior.Then I will get a photo of it.
