This project was at the request of my younger daughter who needed to fit her queen mattress she’d gotten as a gift, provide lots of bookshelf and storage space. I went with pine (again) as I knew this wasn’t going to be a piece of furniture that she kept after heading off to college, but I wanted it to be sturdy but 100% free-standing – so it’s mostly 2×8 and 2×12 lumber. It’s totally over-engineered, but this was before I’d really gotten into woodworking, so i was making it up as I went along. As with my other beds, I incorporated pieces of childhood furniture into the final product (pickets), and it turned out really well. She loves it.

Ever think about building in a hiding spot?

Ha! Oddly enough, I did. If you slide the mattress away from the corner, I left a trap door sanded, but not wood-filled or glued. It was really for storage, but in theory I could hide a kid (or Christmas presents) in there as long as I remain outside to put the mattress back in place.

Really nice work. I will doing something similar for my youngest son. Most likely with a baseball theme.
