Another box for another grandson

I have another 5-yr-old grandson birthday coming up, so I decided to carve another “bird box.”

Made from a scrap piece of walnut. Squared up on the table saw. I ran it across a 5/6” ogee bit on the router table. The hard part was carving the letter and the picture. Master woodcarver, I’m not. Anyway, I then sliced the top off with the band saw, hogged out some of the wood with a Forstner bit, and took the rest out with gouges and chisels.

A few coats of shellac. Knocked off some of the shine with steel wool.

Two matched pairs of 1/4” rare earth magnets to hold the lid on.

Great looking box. He will cherish it.

Master wood carver, perhaps not but wood carver, definitely.
It’s all practice.
Keep chugging like the little engine.

Michael, this is a work of love, and it shows. You chose a tough way to make a box. Keep boxing and keep posting.
