End Grain Cutting Boards

I had been making canoe paddles from cherry for several years; I ended up with a significant number of 1 1/8” cherry pieces that I did not know what to do with. While perusing the internet, I came across end grain cutting boards. What an idea! All of that cherry went into numerous cutting boards – and people LOVED them.

So I branched out (pun intended) and started using some special woods (some of them very expensive exotics) form my local shop (KJP Select Hardwoods in Ottawa). The above photos are a sampling of hundreds of boards I have done over the past 6 years.

Now I have run into http://lumberjocks.com/McLeanVA/blog/18432, and now there is going to be more dust in the family home (I have a small workshop in the basement – I also have a VERY understanding wife!)

Nice work. I like the ones where you bookmatched the end grain cuts to make that Rorschach look. A person could see things in some of them.

Thanks for posting.

Here are a few pics of boards I have done over the past few years, before I sustained an injury. I hope to be back in the “dust room” soon

I should have noted that several of my centre pieces are made from end-grain Canary Wood
