This 9” long maple burl box was made from a single piece of big leaf maple burl that I import from Washington state a pallet full at a time.
I kept looking at this one particular blank which was originally intended for turning material, and wondering how I could incorporate that wonderful bark inclusion, and came up with this idea. The interior is done with a template and a router with a collar guide, so the only joinery involved is the hinges, which I could have done a better job with. Finished with Watco, shellac, then water based lacquer.

Well, it sure came out nice! You just bandsawed the top off of it, I take it?

Thanks all. Tom, correct, I bandsawed the top off and then jointed the faces. My jointer has the Byrd/Shelix cutterhead and even burl cuts glass smooth. Almost like cheating.

What a great idea. I will keep that in the memory bank (if I can remember where the memory bank is).
