Sydney's final resting place

A friend asked me quite some time back if I’d make her dog, Sydney, an urn. Well of course I would!! I asked what kind of wood she preferred but she said, “just whatever you have laying around the shop, nothing fancy”. Some time went by, during which I acquired my dovetail jig – so I sized my practice boards to what I needed for this urn, even though they were poplar (ugh). To my surprise, those practice boards turned out pretty good so I decided to use them. It’s not entirely perfect but pretty darn close. I thought my friend would appreciate my very first dovetailed box because she likes woodworking, too. Being as it was poplar, I had to figure out a way to try to make it pretty. I used GF Java gel stain and added walnut for the top and bottom pieces and the carving. I cut the heart shape and carved it with the dremel. I was fairly pleased with the final product. Before I finished this (was trying to decide how to make it pretty), I started and finished my 2nd dovetailed box which was for my stepdaughter. That’s how long it took me to decide how to make the poplar as pretty as I could!

I don’t see my friend often enough but they came by last weekend with a 6-pack of my favorite hard cider so I figure I made out pretty darn good! :))) So now my friend not only has my first dovetailed box but a final resting place for her beloved Sydney.
