This is a wedding gift for my great niece who is getting married on Sept. 1st this year. I found out she had two black labs so I incorporated them into the clock.
The burl was given to me by the guy I bought my lathe from in Arizona. He said he dragged it around for 10 years and I had it sitting in my wood storage for about 5 years. I walked by and it said it wanted to be a clock…so it is.
It was flat on the front but 1” to 1 3/4” tapered on the back. I cut it down with hand power plane and then ran it through the 20” planer at the high school.

The laser work was done for me by LJ Kposty and his wife. Thanks, Ken!!! The back side was first lasered with my name and the date to test the cutting of the wood.
It is a maple burl and is finished with many coats of lacquer and a final finish of gloss poly.

Cheers, Jim

Excellent clock Jim. It will make a fine gift that will be remembered. That’s a beauty of a piece of Maple burl.
I guess a total of 15 years storage was worth it.

Great looking burl clock Jim. I am glad I am not the only one that has tree parts in the shop that take their time declaring what they want to be. I get all kinds of funny looks from people when they point to a one piece of wood or another in my shop and ask me what I am going to do with that and I answer, “It hasn’t told me yet”.

Thanks, Charles and Swirt.

Hi Swirt. I’m with you. I go past all these wood blanks that were roughed out and logs in the front of the barn and wait for them to tell me what they want to be.

Cheers, Jim
