Cherry Burl Bowl

I cut down a cherry tree near a dirt road to get the burl that made this. The road crew had repeatedly hit it with equipment during its lifetime, and left a lot of healed over growth that made for some dramatic grain.

It took me nearly a year to turn this. I roughed it out, wrapped it in paper and stuck it in a cardboard box on a shelf. Every few months I’d take it down, look at it, and think “not yet”.

Finally I got brave enough to finish it. It sold the day after I put the final finish on.

I got $60 for it. I maybe could have gotten more, maybe not. I’ve been selling burl pieces about this size for that much, where a non-burl piece will sit on a shelf for half as much.

Great looking bowl. What are the dimensions? You should raise the price on your bowls in my opinion. Keep up the good work.

It was roughly 10 inches diameter, IIRC.

Like I said, I have non-burl bowls that haven’t sold in a year, but the burl ones always sell at the higher price. I wish I knew why.

Wow, that was one gorgeous piece of wood. I have to agree with the others though, I feel it should have went for much more than that.
