This was one of the more fun projects I’ve ever done this lady contacted me said she wanted to have a desk built for her husband for Christmas but it wanted it to be different I am known throughout Austin is being an eccentric type of woodworker just different so she pretty much gave me creative freedom she just knew she wanted to have rgb led lights that change to any color of te spectrum with remote and be made out of knotty Alder and she wanted to look like a regular desk and she wanted to make sure it had a headphone stand so I rack my brain and came up with this it was hard trying to find it how to make the lights shine out from behind the raised panels so I thought about acrylic plexiglass and I can get the lights to shine through but it wasn’t bright enough until I realized I had a piece of plexiglass that was broke and every time I ran the LEDs across that crack area where the scratch in the break was the lights shine. Like fiber optic where it got super bright so I got pieces of acrylic completely flush with the raised panels and I cut a hole with a router in the middle of the acrylic behind the raised panel and that’s where I installed the RGB LED light then I put an acrylic insert in the desk with LED lights installed in the front of the the acrylic embedded in wood then I drilled 3/16 holes to the RGB LED lights from the acrylic so the light shines through to it then I had to come up with a good headphone stand that matches desk so I was heating up some acrylic try to roll it up going to light it up as a headphone stand when I got sidetracked with my wife and I left the acrylic in the oven for too long and when I opened it up it look like Styrofoam so I rolled it up cut it on the chop saw and I was just thinking if I could get that thing to light up that’s it so I set the RGB lights strip in the middle of the acrylic and it lit up and I knew it was by came up with the perfect headphone stand then I made the paper organizer by mortise and Tenon staggering the Knotty Alder boards it also has a CPU Department underneath that’s articulating that opens up and has two sets of European style hinges and has shelving underneath to the right and the hardest part of it all was getting the wiring everywhere throughout without it being seen so I use a spiral upcut mortising bit on my router and ran it in the trim there’s so many layers to this desk I couldn’t get enough pictures on here to show it you really need to see it in action I have videos of it if anybody’s interested just message me and I can get you the videos it’s pretty wicked it has a remote that controls everything needless to say the husband was ecstatic he had no clue in the wife didn’t have no clue neither cuz I didn’t let her see it either
