Here is my first attempt at building a mantle. The house had 9’ ceilings and an old pine mantle that was only about 4’ tall. I covered the brick with ceramic tile and built the bottom section from the hearth to the mantle first then installed the top section that goes from the mantle to the ceiling. It’s made of oak plywood and moldings are all solid oak, made in shop.

All it needs now is a warm toasty fire. The crown came out very well. If I had a fire place, I’d build one like this.

Very grand. Unusual stain coloring, may I ask what it is?

Thanks all.
rpmurphy509 the stain is red mahogany with a satin coat of lacquer sprayed on. The color came out much darker in the pics.
I knew a guy that stained everything he built special walnut and I would give him a hard time because I was a natural freak. The last I saw him he was a natural freak and now I’m a red mahogany addict. It seams when I show someone the stain on some wood they want there project stained with it too!

Nice mantle – I would have preferred it a lighter color – but that is one of the reasons that they have so many different colors – so we can pick one we like.
