Fish out of Water

This was a gift for my brother’s birthday, he likes fish and has a large, really cool salt water tank as a bar in his basement. The idea came from pictures i’d seen online so I drew up the fish on paper and adhered it to a nice piece of curly maple. One side has some nice grain that my Grandpa thought would look cool on the fish. Grandpa and I now have a standing Tuesday shop day date which is the best day of the week for me – and this is what we did last week. He got a real kick out of watching me cut this fish out on his scroll saw and as he is a scrap hoarder like myself, we kept all the little pieces that were cut out :) Took forever to cut and even longer to sand. Getting in all those tight spaces will make your knuckles ache. I sanded the fish down so that the middle is thicker than all the outer edges. The eyes are axel pegs I dipped in GF Java stain to give them some color. The base is 2 pieces of 3/4” curly maple glued up and shaped using every power sanding mechanism I have. Then all by hand. I glued in the aluminum rod (which I sanded to give it a brushed look) to the base but left the fish unglued so my brother could move the fish however he wants. Finishing the base was easy but the fish was a bit difficult. 4 coats gloss wipe on poly then waxed.

Brother was very happy with his birthday present so I am happy too :)

Nice fish! You drew it out really well. I could see sanding that one took a minute.

All of those pieces will be needed someday, good save.

Agree sanding all of that must have taken a minute. That grain streak gives a skeletal look to the fish. Nice work.

Thanks for posting.

Way back when spending time with my Dad, and my Uncle in their shop was always the highlight

Good looking design, and the rod not being glued solid is a good idea. Great job.
