I got tired of junk furniture that I bought from retail stores that fell apart after several moves and purposes.
So I said, “I can build that better and stronger”, so I did. Then I looked around and started building everything else that needed replacing. I bought a few wood magazines and a couple of books on furniture building and a circular saw. Picked up some nice boards at the home center. and in my spare bedroom, built a bookcase that could stand a tornado. The joinery was simple dado and glue with alot of screws and a few well placed dowels. The base was mitered and skirted as additional support. The back is nailed and glued on ( every 3 inches ) excessive, yes. I’ve moved 29 times in 25 years, and I’m not losing another piece of furniture because of construction flaws.

Very solid construction. Over-kill? Definitely!
Being in the military we were constantly moving, and constantly having our
furniture broken, so I can sympathize with your design decision.

It’s beautiful!
I understand the moving thing as well—i didn’t reach your numbers but it was enough. The time that I planned for ongoing moves and got rid of a lot of stuff, we bought a house and I haven’t moved since. I sure wish I had that stuff back now.. sigh

Very nice. Definitely looks tornado-proof.

Well done. The joinery you used there should last forever.
