Box for a bird buddy

A few days ago we had to give peace to my daughter’s pet bird. While we called him a parakeet he was actually an English Budgie. They look much the same except that EB’s are slightly larger and the eyes are different.

Gilligan was with us for nearly 11 years and I shared resposibility for him with my daughter. I thought of him as a grandson. About a week ago he started wheezing and went off his feed. At first he was treated for a respiratory infection, but he did not improve at all over a few days. The vet said it was likely a tumor in his neck that was constricting his breathing and not allowing him to eat much. It took a few days for us to come to terms with the situation and we had him put down.

I built this box from some of my pew mahogany. My butt joints are cleverly disguised by small dados run along the joint. The finish is with Danish oil.

Sorry for the loss of your little buddy Dave. It’s alway tough when we lose a loving pet.
The box you built for him is very nice.

My condolences Dave. I had some birds when I was a kid. They were fine, loving, playful pets. May God’s peace be upon you during your grief.

Dave, nice box, nice sentiment. I like your photo work on this posting. You did a fine job of illustrating the steps involved.

A nice final resting place.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts.

Somehow this humble project got to the Daily Top Three. Appropriate, I think.
