Really excited about this last project. Client approached me with some 100 year old oak flooring. It had been given to him by someone whose grandfather had installed it in his house. The client wanted something special made to give back. The rollerball and fountain pens are both made from the flooring as is the presentation box. The interior of the box clearly shows that it was once flooring. I think the outside hides it quite well. The box construction is a stopped mitre joint and was finished by fuming for 12 hours followed by shellac a little milk paint and wax. The bottom is fabric glued over plywood. If you’ve read Matt Kenney’s new book you’ll see that he was a strong influence on this box’s design. Hinges are hidden hinge pins from Lee Valley. The supports inside the box are white pine and are held in place with a dab of CA glue so they can be easily removed if wanted.

Comments and critiques welcome.

Wow! Simple. Elegant, but that story really really makes the whole thing that much more incredible. I love to see/read about the pieces guys like you make with a story behind them. It really adds depth to already great craftsman pieces. The pens look great as well and I’m sure the gift will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks MilFlyer – it was more fun to make (also a bit more stressful too) knowing the story. From what I understand the house that the grandfather built and where the wood came from has since been bulldozed so this will be the only remaining keepsake.

The box looks terrific, and those pens will surely be cherished. Always cool to hear a good back story, too.

Nicely done!

Very nice pen presentation box. I have turned a few pens but never made a presentation box. The quality in yours is excellent. Thanks for inspiring

Super build and turded pens are great keep sakes. Fountain pens are rarely used these days.

Thanks for the kinda words.

I use a fountain pen everyday Handtooler. And I’m noticing that they are selling well. Especially with the younger folks.

The true purpose of a box is to have a purpose, well done. Not sure what it is but the look of 1/4 sawn white Oak is very unique.

Thanks everyone – yes Andre, qswo is very distinct and I love it. Fuming it just brings it alive.

Really nice work, the previous owner of the wood floors will be “floored” when he receives this gift. Here are 3 links I found regarding the hinges (thank you for providing information about them):

That’s them. This is the second project I’ve used them on and really like them for their clean look. Work well too.
