Here is a little project that I gave my oldest son for Father’s Day today. It is made of some old air dried walnut that a friend gave me and some curly maple. It was just one of those projects that I seem to fight all the way through for some reason. I dimensioned and re-sawed with machines and from there was entirely hand tools. I am pleased with how it turned out. My son and I finished it up together this morning. After breakfast we applied a coat of wax. My favorite part was watching him read the note on the bottom – he loved it and I am thankful for the time we spent together today.

Very attractive. That curly maple goes beautifully with the walnut.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I didn’t really mention this in my original post. I used the basic principles of the golden ratio while designing. I have often made things in the past that just kind of “looked off” proportionality. I just recently discovered the golden ratio and thought I would try to incorporate. In that respect, I really like what I ended up with. Also, this is my first attempt at working with curly maple. I used a little amber transtint with the shellac to try to enhance the curly maple. If anyone would like to add suggestions for improvements, I would love to hear them. I plan to make a few more of these for Christmas presents this year and would love to add some improvements from fellow lumberjocks.

Thanks, Mark

The Golden Rule sure worked because it looks great, can’t go wrong with those ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Excellent article in Wood Magazine issue 173 November 2006 about the Golden and How to build a Fibonacci gauge for designing projects. Extremely interesting… Thanks for inspiring
