I had given my wife my first turned pen several weeks ago, only to see it disappear in her purse never to return. So, instead of worrying about hurt feelings, I just made more pens. Virtually all of our family members and many of my colleagues at the office have one of my originals, now.
On a recent trip to Woodcraft, Kristin, my wife, suprised me by asking “Why don’t I have a pen?” I didn’t bother to remind her that she had the very first pen that I ever made, I just asked what style, finish, and wood she would like.
I never buy kits at Woodcraft because the price is just so much higher than online, but I bowed to spousal pressure and picked up an Atlas pen kit in Platinum (of course), while Kristin picked out a dyed wood blank for the body.
I don’t actually like turning the stablized dyed wood. My chisels don’t seem to take shavings from the blank. the wood just seems to disintegrate. I had a lot of dust and a pocked finish at the end. Thankfullly, Micromesh, some CA glue and a LOT of finish was able to put a good shine on the pen.

That came out nice. I like turning pens. A nice quick little project to pass the time. My wife had me turn a pile of them for her family members for Christmas.

I’ve seen your rosewood and Cocobolo pens. They always look great.
Do you have trouble with Cocobolo leaking sap through the grain while you are finishing it? I was applying Shellawax to a Cocobolo blank today and found that the wood changed color slightly and I encountered sap leaking through the grain during heavy friction. Very strange.

I finally got The Boss to get excited about a pen. She likes the color purple, so I made her one from purpleheart. “Oh that’s nice” (yawn). Then I got some pink ivory and made her one. “Oh, that’s nice.” Finally I bought a blank of acrylic with light and dark purple swirlies. “Oh wow, that’s really nice!” Perseverence pays off.

there have been a few stories on here about wives and pens… interesting that such interest/disinterest/controversy/excitement takes place over a pen while rarely do we see the same discussions about other pieces of woodworking.

I like it, very nice. I like the atlas pen too. I think I’ve made about 5 of them since they came out. A couple ‘wood’ and a few ‘Acrylics’.
That pen will show up and she will wonder how that got in here purse.

If any of you guys ever want to make the perfect pen for a lady – turn one from Tulipwood. It is easy to turn and comes out great. I’ve given my wife at least a half dozen pens, she looses them as fast as I can make them – but I would never complain :-)).

Pens make a great gift. I made 25 or so for my staff before I retired. A little thought goes a long way.

Pens are very popular at my office, too. I even had the CTO ask to buy one during a meeting yesterday. I have given out quite a few to colleagues, so they are getting a bit plentiful during meetings, and people are asking me for Xmas orders.
