Well I feel as though I can sigh with relief as this project has now been completed. It is my first Origional design and this is the prototype. I origioanlly started this back in july but since then there have been many interuptions and it is only now 3months later that it is finally finished. PHEW!
I thought it up and slowly it has come about with many problems encountered and fixed, there is a couple of design problems that with the next one will be ok. Like a draw front that was too thin so I had to put a thin strip of wood (well actually a paddle pop stick) to strengthen it. As it was going to be covered anyway it looks ok.

It is made of maple, cut on the scrollsaw, carved in places and coated with what felt like thousands of coats of white shellac.
The next one I make will be made with a nicer timber as I really dont like the colour but the pink interior looks great with it. It is only 12cm wide and 7.5cm high.
I carved the lid and the leaves act as a lever to open the lid. Because of the way the lid opens the draw at the back has no handle, so it is a little secret draw. Also the draws are kept in place with magnets to stop them coming out easily.
My daughter has already put her name on this one so if I want one, it looks as though I will have to start making it.
Hope you like it.

Very nice. It reminds me of some of the early 20th century porcelain pieces that my grandparents had. Lots of potential for variations, too.

You mean 12 cm by 7 cm, right? Cute little box, in any event.

Beautiful work Theresa.
The little drawers are really cool, and your carving work speaks for itself.

Theresa,

Your box is really quite lovely. We can’t imagine making such tiny drawers . . . and with such details. The carving is very nice. An extremely delightful box! Thanks for posting.
