Shaker writing desk

Recently completed Shaker writing desk. I cheated on this one and used plans from wood magazine’s wood store. The plans were good and would have been even better if I had actually followed them. Sadly, I had my first tablesaw kickback occurrence while crosscutting the table top to size. I was uninjured but the first table top was ruined. The top didn’t fit my sled, and I decided I could cut without it, got away from me just a tiny bit and you know the rest of the story. I now have some unintended box top material.

Anyway, the 2nd one came out just fine. The base of this table (curly cherry) was beefed up to remove the lower stretcher so a chair could fit in. This included using leg and upper trestle material of 1 1/6” thickness, making the resulting base quite sturdy in fact.

Most all of the work on this other than ripping and thicknessing was done using hand tools. The curly maple top was smoothed entirely with hand planes and scrapers, but I did have to go back over it with 200 grit due to the use of dye. The top was dyed with Transtint Golden Brown and the base was stained with General Finishes “Warm Cherry”. A seal coat of shellac was put on the whole thing and then 3 coats of ArmRSeal were added, finally rubbing out with Liberon 0000 wool and Howard FeedNWax.

This table sold very quickly. Thanks for looking!

Very nice work! Shaker is my favorite style. If you don’t mind me asking, how much did it sell for?

Hello schwingding;
—-your table has the aesthetically wood properties, that makes Shaker furniture such a wonder-full tradition for workers of wood and fine addition to any home!

I also see that you do much//most of all your work ’’using hand tools’’ after the initial truing of the wood. And then when I read about the smoothing with hand planes and scrapers I am truly impressed. Yeah….yeah,yeah, I know about the dye thing there but thats the dye. Your use of the curly maple for the top is very pleasing to the eye and adds a ’wow’ factor to your work.

Now I noticed you didn’t mention much about the legs, but again I must add splendiferous legs that you have also mated to the table top. If I may ask; what is the wood species on the legs….?

Great finish and yes to the shellac and wax….what a great wood project and piece of ‘wood art’!

Thank you for sharing this one with us here at LJ….
GODSPEED,
Frank

Thank you all for the VERY nice comments! Frank I was remiss in adding that the base was made from curly cherry. Damned expensive, too. I had hoped to make this table from a stock of curly maple that I had on hand, until I realized it called for thicker wood. I think I paid $8/ft for that cherry. In the end I’m glad I did because I think the cherry and maple contrast really add to the table’s overall appeal.

elegant is a good word for this. It’s beautiful.

I have to smile at the “I cheated and used plans” and then the: but I didn’t do this and I changed that …

—-thank you schwingding;
....for your prompt reply….and yes, when I was looking//comparing the top to the legs I noticed the contrast which I believe only adds, as you say to the ’’table’s overall appeal’.

I also have noticed your other postings of projects, which I will get back to later….but for know I’m heading outside to work.

Have a good day and….,

Thank you.

Frank

Very nice table, schwing! Sorry to hear about the kickback…been there, done that, got the scar. The table was worth the hoopla!

Great piece of work!

I’d really like to sneak into your shop and pilfer your stock of wood. You seem to get a hold of some great material.

Easily one of the best pieces I’ve seen. I admired it yesterday in a post about planes. It really is exceptional. The last flame cherry I priced was over $14/BF.

This popped up on the home page, schwingding. Fabulous table. It’s great to hear it was done with hand tools for the most part. I’m glad you managed to avoid injury when making the first top. Ouch!

Thanks all. I’ve been notified that this will appear in an upcoming Woodcraft Magazine, and I have a commission to build two more just like it. Anyone see any room for improvements? Now is the time to speak up! Constructive criticism encouraged as always.
