I was browsing through Lumberjocks one day looking for ideas and inspiration when I came across Xmas stars produced by Roger Strautman, and I thought that will do for me. I fancy having a go at those and if I could make a decent job of them they would be suitable for small gifts.
The star at the top of the tree was made using the wood from two different trees, the centre octagon was made with square edges. The points have an 8 degree angle on both pieces sloping back from the centre ridge, fitting around the octagon proved to be tricky and I footered around a lot with that part. You probably wont see from the photograph but the side points are not in line, the casual observer wont notice this but a Lumberjock would!
Thanks for the ideas Roger.

Absolutely stunning work! I’m glad that my star has inspired someone else to try it out and to use some imagination along the way. Great chip carving!!!

Chris, I forgot, Woodcarving illustrated will have a step by step of my making this cross with the chip carving but it won’t come out until next season.
