Phone Dock

I managed to grab an hour in the workshop last weekend and got to use a few tools to make this simple phone dock for ‘Her indoors’. My wife had a habit of plugging her phone charger into a certain plug socket in the kitchen and then balancing her phone precariously on top of the plug. Now normally I must admit my attitude would have been Her phone, her problem if it falls onto the granite worktop and smashes, but what hacked me off was the fact that balancing her phone on the plug meant that the socket beside the one she was using also couldn’t be used and annoyingly, that’s the socket I want to plug the iron into to press my shirt when I get up at 4.30am on a Monday morning.

So saw saw, chop chop in an offcut of hard maple and marital bliss has been restored.

When I took the photos of this little project, my wife was sitting at the breakfast bar watching me. The conversation went something like this:

Her: I worry about you sometimes.

Me: Why?

Her: Well I don’t worry about you, I just think you’re mad.

Me: Why?

Her: Well what normal person takes photos of a block of wood and posts them on the internet?

Me: I’m not alone you know, 1000s of people do this.

Her: Well there’s not much hope for the planet then is there?

The things we woodworkers have to put up with eh?

Thanks for looking!

I pressed a shirt once…...naaah, just kidding.

Cool project. Glad to see you made it to the shop.

Ingenious doohickey Andy. A simple solution to a complex sociological and marital conundrum. Bravo.

Lots of mad hatters on the net posting small blocks of wood cut from bigger blocks of wood. Some even make movies about it. What was she thinking?

Nice solution to a pressing issue Brit ;)

You let your wife have a phone? Sad.

I have some washing and ironing saved up for next time you’re over this way, Andy.

Beautiful work. Nice proportions. Lovely rounded corners, elegant smooth finish. It would make a great party game, “What is it?”

Thanks guys.

Woody – ‘Her indoors’ = wife. As in “I can’t go to the football today. Her indoors has got me doing chores.”

Great ideas- to flatter, I’ll make a couple of those this wknd as both DW and I could use them. Both our phones have taken tumbles from stretched out cords. Great bit of dialog b/w you and your spouse.

That’s quite clever. I don’t think our outlets over here would hold the weight for long.
