Hey everybody,

I got this piece of wood as a christmas gift, however after planing the surface down a bit of checking had become apparent. I decided instead of filling the cracks with resin as I was originally planning, I would try doing bowtie splines instead. These are my first attempt, so considering that I am pretty happy with how they came out despite some mess ups here and there.

The splines were hand sawn from black walnut, and the recesses were cut with hand chisels. Let me know what you think.

Note: picture is sideways, sorry about that. You can still see it though :)

Nicely done and by hand too.

You can also do this using a router and template guide. The pattern does not have to be a bow tie it can be a figure 8 or a variety of other shapes that decorates and in some cases obscures the reap purpose of holding the wood together.
