Trammel / Beam Compass

So following my Telescopic Stop Block I did the other day, this Trammel / Beam Compass came out of it also.

In my old telescopic stop block I used this 6mm MDF piece with the slot as a stop block, but was not as good as the new one I made.
When I dismantle the old stop block I was looking at this piece of MDF and it came to me instead of throwing it into the dustbin to use it for making a Trammel / Beam Compass out of it… for me nothing is scrap as we tent to say allot in woodworking.
So since I had that MDF piece all ready made for me, I glued a block of plywood with a nail in it’s center at one end, and made another block with 3 holes as the pencil holder, a carriage bolt with a washer and wingnut to tighten the holder and a dowel to keep it track into the slot ... and quickly I made my self a very basic Trammel / Beam Compass and … here is the result, simple and functional !!!

Thank you for watching and commenting if you like :)

Hello Steliart

A nice compass.
Good idea
You can drill a hole on the right to hang it on the wall

Thanks for sharing the pictures and the pattern

Nice Compass Stelios! Do you think a printable ruler stuck on the edge would help?

JUST A NOTE

On compasses with pencil I always try to use a 2B pencil not the normal HB.
The 2B has a softer lead and darker graphite and makes a very distinct bolder and clear to see line circle. !!!

One more thing TONY
For a ruler I will have to change the design of the compass so that the needle point and the pencil can be readable and adjustable, but I think it will work out great… thanks :)

After the suggestion of my friend Tony, I went ahead an added a ruler to the design which is offset by 60mm so that it corresponds with the left side of the pencil holder block (see photo)

Nice job on it. I think it will be a handy tool to have. I know before I had one I always needed one. LOL.

Agreed it’s not something we use every day but on the other hand it cost nothing to have one just in case :)

Hey Dave :) hahaha
That’s so true when you don’t have something you always need it and when you finally get it you never use it LOL
