Here is another “flower” goblet. This one is about 9” tall and 8” in diameter. It is made out of oak that I picked up from the wood recycling center (i.e. wood garbage dump). The waving of the top is due to wood shrinkage. Oak is among the types of wood that shrinks the most. The goblet bent in this uniform way on it’s own (not my contribution). It is always unpredictable how oak bends. I made another similar goblet from the same tree (the piece next to the one used for this goblet in the trunk) but the bending is completely different. I’ll post it when I put a finish on it (still drying).

I sanded the piece to 800 grit then applied Watco oil and wax. It looks more fragile than it actually is. The only problematic part is the bark that is fragile when thin.

In case you wonder how much time it took, it is 1 1/2 hours at the lathe and 2 1/2 sanding/finishing. The second goblet took me 2 hours at the lathe since I decided to sand wet. I think it will only take 1/2 hours sanding since it is smooth. I think sanding wet on the lathe cuts considerably the total time (by about 1 hour). Usually it takes me only 1 hour to sand but this piece was challenging due to the waves on the surface.

Enjoy,
Alin

Dan,

I have a paper deadline for tomorrow and a grant proposal deadline next week (work stuff but very important). After that, I’ll make a video of a goblet and post it. The trick with the goblets is to get the wall thickness about 3/32 and uniform.

Absolutely beautiful. I can’t wait for the video – although I will still not be able to turn on, but it will be fun to watch you do it.

Thanks Everybody for your nice comments.

I’ll prepare a video, hopefully over the weekend, on making a goblet. I’ll write a blog entry with extra explanations and the videos.

Hello Alin;
—-great showpiece here and truly a work of ‘wood art’!

I truly do love the subtle and slim feline of the shape that you have captured in this project….which in turn compliments your unique style of woodworking ability.

Thank you for sharing….
GODSPEED,
Frank

Thanks Frank for putting it so nicely. For all my woodturnings I try to do as little thinking and planning as possible. I usually get inspired only when I start turning. Occasionally I’m asked what do my turning represent and my answer is always the same: nothing in particular, that is what I was thinking when I turned it.

I think one of the hardest things when turning, this applies to woodworking probably as well, is to refrain yourself from complicating things for the sake of complication. Very simple designs are usually the most striking. At least for woodturning, maintaining a simple large curve is a lot more difficult than putting a lot of decoration. Especially when the natural edge is maintained, a natural uncomplicated look is the key to a good piece (my opinion of course).

I just bought an old used lathe and know nothing about using it, but am looking forward to it. Been mostly reading and getting educated so far (esp. since I am home sick). I just watched your two videos and found them very helpful. I am a graphic designer by occupation, so am really excited about the chance to do some fairly artistic pieces eventually. This goblet is amazing.

Hi Alin.

I am getting around to the posts that I have either missed or were posted before I came on board and to put it simply this is a work or art. Getting Frank to comment on a piece speaks volumes about its artistry since wood art is his specialty. Seeing turning posts like this makes me regret not having a lathe in my shop. It is something I will have to rectify but for now I will simply participate vicariously.

Thanks for the post.

Kevinw and Scott,

Thanks for your comments. I think you should both get a lathe and start playing. I have to warn you, as I warned others, that it is addictive.
