So you can tell this is a much simpler project than most of the amazing things posted on LJ. You guys/gals do amazing things. After reading some of the stories behind various builds on LJ, I thought this would be fun to share since the necessity behind it is more interesting than the end result.

LJ member: Why would this guy make a frame for his kindle?

Me: Well it is because of a conversation I had with my wife… it went something like this:

Me: Hey honey, i got us a set of those Philips hue lights so now we can turn our lights on and off with our voice. You can’t turn the switch off though otherwise the voice control wont work.

Wife: But it’s more work to say “Alexa, turn on the lights” than it is to just hit a switch.

Me: (thinking to myself): she’s right, but a physical Philips hue switch is going to be extra $$ and require adjustments to the electrical wires in the room since it is on a dimmer. I don’t want to have to figure all that out.

So I took a spare kindle, did the simplest hacking job in the world so it does not sleep when it is plugged in, downloaded a Philips hue app, disabled every other feature i could find, framed it and put it on the wall. Boom… touch screen switch that still allows the voice control. It also has the added bonus that we can use it to remote to my desktop (which is wired to my home theater) and if we are playing music or something was can use this kindle to control it.

The frame itself is, super simple. Miter joints with splines for strength. It is shop scrap.

Cool idea, maybe. My buddy takes his bullhorn and yells into it for Alexa to turn of all the lights in the house. Problem is he does it for the house next door. I have watched, it is hilarious. Reminds me of that movie Grumpy Old Men.

ROFL.
