My wife’s sister asked me to make a couple of benches to match the farmhouse table that I had made a while back. The benches were made with 7/4 Rustic Ash material and stained with a dark walnut stain. I face glued two pieces to get the desired thickness for the legs, then ran a dado thick enough to slide the 1.5” thick panel in place. I attached the support rails with half lap joints and doweling them in place. I added cross bracing with pocket screws. The top is attached with screws from the underside.

The benches came together really well with the lessons learned during the table build. As with every other project, there are things I’d do differently if given another chance…but the sister in law is happy with the set, so I’ll call it a success.

A lot of big Ash going down my way due to Ash Borer, same on your end? That is some wide Ash, haven’t seen any that wide for a few years around here.

Looks like a match, if she likes the table, she should be happy. Everything looks cozy in that kitchen pic, seems that they may be large pieces, but then again that looks like a huge kitchen.

Nice work, thanks for posting.

therealSteveN – I work for a lumber distributor/manufacturer and I’m not sure where they sourced the ash from. There was a lot of mixed widths in the material I had. Most was 5-6” wide. I did have a few nice wide boards for the seats and table top, but all had to be glued.

Her kitchen is very large. The table and benches are 7’ 8” long, and she had plenty of room to spare in the dining area.

Yeah, I was seeing it on the seats, nice wide stock, I didn’t see anything tell tale to make me believe they were glue ups, so if they are you killed the grain match hurdle.
