This is a footed dish turned from a piece of Blackwood, about 8 years ago a pair of 100 Yr old + Blackwood trees came down in a storm on my son n laws dad’s farm. In all He about 43 Cub’ Mtrs milled on site from both trees. I just happened to be about to make sure that no “off cuts” were misplaced other than in the back of my shed.
I like to add a bit of difference to the top as well as the bottom, I bet the first thing you do when you pick up an interesting piece is to look at the bottom ( bet ya do)
I textured the top and added a wash coat of burnt seina (to the texture area) and lightly rubbed it with some 600 grit to expose the underlayer.
Top side was textured with a Sorby type texturing tool and the underside done with a Dremel.
The finish is about 5 or 6 coats of “home brew” sealer and a top coat of Ubeaut traditional wax buffed on a mop.
And yes it is supprisingly stable if loaded up.

Absolutely beautiful, the wood, texture banding, the feet and finish are all in harmony and beyond description. A true work of art.

Very nice. I especially like the feet. Most turners don’t think like that. When you said “blackwood”, I had to look and see where you were from. I hear blackwood and think clarinet. Really good piece.

Yep, I always look at the bottom. Fantastic piece though, just beautiful. Love every part of it, those feet look very nice too on this bowl.

You sure have the texturing down to a fine atr…well done. The feet on this project really add to it. Nice touch.
