Hey Lumberjocks,
Just wanted to share the Dragonfly Sculpture that I finished up this past weekend. It’s about 36 inches long and 30 inches wide. The dragonfly ended up in the master bath – the final touch to that renovation. The body of the dragonfly is made from a flitch cut of Madrone. I purchased the entire trunk -10 foot of a Madrone tree- in Foresthill Ca several years ago and this is the last of it. The flitch cut is the first cut off a downed tree almost all bark and about 4 inches thick and 8 inches wide. The wings of the dragonfly are made from Mango, one of my favorite woods. I purchased the Mango in Hawaii last year. Most of the shaping of the body was done with a draw knife, from Gramps old tools, followed by a lot of grinding with my 4 inch grinder and a flap wheel. All four wings were angled upward for a little more 3D. I went through the entire sanding progression 80-400, followed by Tung oil on the body and Linseed Oil on the wings. Once that was complete – wipe on Poly Urethane.
Thanks for checking out the Mango Dragonfly Sculpture
Greg

That looks great. I am a fan of Mango wood too. I wish I had more of it.

That’s cool as heck. Have never worked with Mango wood and really like its character. Well done!
