Wall-Mounted Bottle Openers

For my upcoming wedding I knew that I wanted to make something for my groomsmen that they’d get some use out of, while customizing it a bit for them and the wedding date. I settled on making a set of wall-mounted bottle openers. I ordered the bottle opener itself off of Etsy, the magnets off of Amazon and the wood was mainly from pieces I have left in the shed.

For every wedding I go to I’ve made the couple a cutting board in a design that I think speaks most to their personalities, but always out of walnut, maple and padauk. This has left me with plenty of remnants from that material, kind of turning into my “style” if you will. The middle piece on the middle panel is so much lighter than the other pieces it makes me wonder if it’s something different. My buddy swears that the other pieces are all cherry but I’ve never bought a single piece of cherry so I have no idea how it would’ve made it’s way into my shop let alone that much of it…

I also used this project as an excuse to buy myself a set of forstner bits as well (craftsman), worked well enough for my needs. Drill press really would’ve come in handy, but was able to eyeball it with a handheld drill.

The general dimensions are approximately 5”x11”x5/8” thick. The pieces turned out to be thinner than I had hoped after all of the finish work but they turned out ok. This resulted in me sweating it over the fact that the magnet (1.5”x3/8”) was going to be too tall to sit flush in the panel without the point of the bit breaking through the face. Also had to juggle the fact that if it was too shallow the magnet wouldn’t be strong enough. I pretty much drilled down just enough for the magnet to sit flush with the backs and it turned out fine. Didn’t do a count on how many caps it would hold though…

You won’t have any problems with a magnet that large grabbing some caps! I usually use a set of four 1/8”x 3/4” magnets to create a large collecting area.

These look great, what did you use to label the openers?

Excellent looking projects. I’m with splintergroup’s question, how did the openers get labeled ?

Thanks. The Etsy vendor is the one that labeled them (this is the one I used). Cost roughly $20 after shipping.
