Threaded Turned Boxes

I got a Hope Threading Jig for Christmas and this is the first two boxes I made with it. The first (smaller cherry box) was made back in January. Threads fit fine at that point but now the male are too small so you can remove the lid without turning (strike one). I suspect wet wood that has now dried combined with my over turning of the male threads. I also dislike the proportions of the knob (strike two). Strike three happened while buffing the outside – got a catch and added a couple of dings (purposely not in photos). Too its credit the threads turned perfectly smooth on the cherry and the wood ha great looks.

Now that I have largely completed a major remodel of my basement office the second and larger box (almost 5 inch tall) was made over the past few days from a hickory blank I had turned round and put tenons on both ends back in January. In my opinion there are too many threads on this box. Next time I think I will remove some male threads at the top which will also serve to guide lid onto base.

The Hope jig came from England and was part of a group buy by some members of a Cincinnati based turning group. The jig and included directions were easy to use and seemed to work precisely.

That’s a pretty nifty gadget. I didn’t realize that there was a jig for that in turning (I’m not very experienced at turning). Thanks for sharing!
