Bit of a basket case...

I made this shelf unit a few months ago but forgot to take any Photos… well went back and got some…

This was a storage unit that utilises woven baskets… in this case, Water Hyacinth from Viet Nam…

The main timber is a favourite of mine… New Guinea Rosewood, and the joinery was made super simple with the TWC..

I just ganged all the legs together and cut each of the notches in two passes … checking that the shelves fitted…

Pocket hole joinery was how I attached the shelves into the notches… this allows breakdown and flatpacking…

All the main shelves are only web frames with the solid top being a few boards laminated…Finished with a few coats of Tung Oil Finish..

That’s the strangest looking cutting board I have EVER seen! ;-)

Great work Larry! I love the idea of it being portable if needed – good thinking!

Nice job and an excellent example of turning lemons into lemonade. For those not aware of it, the water hyacinth is a “weed” that will over run a waterway in no time if given half a chance. It’s a nuisance plant and has shown up in some north american water ways where they are having a tough time controlling it. It’s one claim to usefulness is in basketr weaving.

Sure makes nice baskets though, right Larry?

Baskets are “in” these days, according to me wife. This looks great. Nicely done. I love the simplicity of it too.

Those baskets are great.
I have seen kids in Ivory Coast (west Africa) weaving those baskets all day long.

Thanks for bringing back those memories Larry.

Larry, that’s a beautifully designed storage unit, and you did a great job on it. It’s a very creative use of those baskets and it looks great. Congratulations.
