I wish i knew who to give partial design credit to on this. There was a similar box on here i saw a couple weeks ago and now i can’t find it. Maybe it just didn’t have “Box” listed in its tags??
Anyway, this is a mixture of hardwoods that i put a simple matte black laquer on. I really like the way the laquer allows the wood grain texture to show….Measures approx 5 1/2” tall x 7” deep x 9 1/2” wide.
I got a few more of these cut out of various material combinations and hope to have them assembled and finished before Christmas! I’ll post the others when i get em done.

Great looking Box Miles. A nice job. The Lacquer looks great. Did you color it yourself if is bought that way?

Mike Shea’s box is similar, but he used contrasting woods. You are right the lacquer is outstanding. I think I’m gonna have to try one, I really liked the theme with Mike’s, now you have just driven it home. That is just a wonderful box.

What Deb said! (x2) Miles, that is one outstanding box. Really like the legs and the lid lift. Plus I love a woodworker who lives dangerously, shootin’ lacquer with a sanding belt and sawdust right there. Reminds me of…me.
Since you gently borrowed the design, I hope you won’t mind if I do as well…
How did you attach the legs? Are the sides tenoned into them?

Thank you all for the compliments.
Karson, the laquer is just like it came in a gallon can i bought some time ago. Prob enough to do 200 more boxes! Lol
Douglas you are too kind…Thanks..The leg is actually pocket screws..NAHHHH just kidding. It is a mortise and tenon, but it only has 2 one half inch wide slots per connection. Plus the slot went through, so was able to miter the tenons to meet. Figure that oughtta hold it!

Got your back covered with the dictionary Thos.
Miles, I love this design. I saw the one you were referring to but I don’t remember who made it. I love the exaggerated curve of the legs. I am a big fan of this design.
And I love the black lacquer. I like the way it allows the grain of the wood to show as well. I use it quite a bit myself but I topcoat it with a clear coat because it has a better wear rating and it really makes the color deep. I use Sherwin’s products.
This is really nice work!

Terrific design an nicely made. Miles since I just love small wooden boxes it’s a delight to see this one. We tend not to offer even constructive criticism on this site, but may I suggest if you make more of these you consider using smaller hinges? The one you have chosen seem to overwhelm the design.
Did you intend to leave out the middle screws?
Great job otherwise, Mate!

CharlieM, funny you ask that….There is some Walnut there! Lol…Tell Debbie shes off the hook!
Don, I agree about the hinges. They’re just some i’ve had a while and got tired of not having a use for them. This is the first decorative box i’ve ever made. I think i might become infatuated with little boxes though! wink
Thanks again for everyones compliments.

I have to make one of these for my niece. Just one question, how did you shape the legs?

Nice box Miles. It looks sturdy enough to hold a baby elephant.
Thomas did you know that we actually have a spell check system here on the forum? I stumbled upon it last week. I may be the last to have found it, but it looks like a few of us can use it and maybe I will enlighten someone. When you are typing and a word is underlined in red – that means it is misspelled. Put your cursor on that word and right click – you will have some spelling options to choose from, select the correct spelling and left click, the change is made for you.

Rb765, To cut the legs you simply layout the arch on the 2 perpendicular sides of the square leg stock. Make the first cut on the bandsaw, then position the scrap cutoff back in place( i simply hold it by hand, but you can tape it together) so you can cut the arch on the other side.

I really like this box. The dimensions are perfect and the finish is striking. I have ‘ebonized’ wood before using alcohol base black shoe dye. The best was called Marine boot black. Only one coat necessary and then buff out with a piece of burlap. Cheers.
