I made these keepsake boxes after watching a video of the Wood Whisperer. I think the video was called Oh, for keep sakes. The one box is made from several 1 1/2” blocks of red oak laminated together in opposite grain orientation with purple heart for the corners. The other is made from a solid piece of purple heart and has red oak corners. The purple heart box I made from a turning blank. I don’t recommend this because I have been fighting warping and cracking. The oak laminated one however with its grain in opposite directions is bullet proof. I first tried to match the end grain up but the box was made from 20 little blocks of wood. So I figured if I couldn’t get it to match then I would make it look like I didn’t want it to match.

Awesome. I need to try this someday. I love hidden catches and compartments in boxes.
