A month ago I had the sermon at church, to involve two small boys more, I told them if they would listen and mark on a piece of paper any time The HOLY SPIRIT was mentioned and give it to me after I would make them something and give it to them next week. I thought of toy cars but came up with these tops instead. The story was one of the most fascinating stories I have ever heard. It can be viewed and listened to with the following link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgLBeNREi1I You will enjoy it, everyone here did and no one complained or fell asleep. A good story stays with you.

I had never made tops before and I was anxious to try my hand at it, I wanted to play with them myself. Since I needed two I just made them by using one piece of wood.

Later I found out I couldn’t have too much bulky wood below the out rim, It would just turn on its side, not good. One I had to modify

Turned the shaft accurately to size with the metal lathe. Just need to cut it in half now. Next was to lathe the handle part, leaving one end rectangular to drill the hole for the shaft and a slot for the string, Drilled the hole with a forester bit, it gives a nice smooth surface so the top will spin freely.

two handles and two tops, Could hardly wait to try them out.

That Was fun and I thought they would enjoy them. something you can’t by at any store. well I decided to make one for myself. How could I make it better and spin longer. Well if I added metal to the out side that should give it more momentum. I found a piece of water pipe and proceeded to cut a metal ring, then made a new top to just fit on the inside of the ring, the wood shrank overnight in the house so epoxy fixed that. That gave me a spin of up to 3 minutes.

Now was the challenge to getting all three spinning

After all that I am still topless. That week I told their mother if they went up for story hour I would give them a special bonus. now they have three tops and I am topless. I have given them another option, go up 4 weeks for the chrildrens story hour in a row and they will get a new toy.

Shop work is tapering off as I have other things to do on my acreage now that the snow is has melted, one being a complete rebuild and refurbishing of my atv, getting ready for more mountain trips.

Thanks for looking, Hope not too many of you are going topless. comments appreciated.

That brings back some memories. I had a top like that at my grandmother’s house when I was a kid. I played with that thing for hours!

Those tops are more fun than a barrel of Monkey’s, nice job, and thanks for sharing.

Tops are awesome

Tops were the thing as were marble when I was a kid.

And

You were encouraged to take them to school

Nice job on the tops, they’ll probably spin longer than you may think
