I've always wanted to make a ukulele (I actually play the uke) - but dont know if i have the skill for that yet. I've seen some tutorials on how to make a banjo - looks like you did an awesome job. I'd love to learn to play. If you ever get around to making a video tutorial on how to make a banjo or ukulele, etc….i'll be the first in line to watch it!!! haha :) welcome to LJs

Greetings DQ,

I see you're a picker, too. Do you play with thumb picks and finger picks, or do you play "drop-thumb" style?
I'm not a banjo picker…. I'm a guitar, mandolin, and upright bass player(very little mandolin). I've been
playing bluegrass music for 35-36 years. Personally, I like the 3 finger style picking, like Scruggs or Crowe.

Thank you for the kind words. I made this custom banjo for my son-in-law, in the bluegrass band called the "Roe Family Singers" out of Minneapolis. You can google them to find out more. He also plays my 53 year old stella guitar. I have always wanted to make a mandolin and learn how to play it. I haven't got up enough nerve to try the scroll and arched top, so I keep procrastinating.

As good as this project and your autoharp look, you shouldn't have any problem with the mandolin's arched top.

Hello dq2,
I have a very nice collection of vintage D-28 Martins, ranging from the 40's-- 50's. I have 3 mandolins,
2 of them Gibsons: one is a 1950 F-5 that I bought off of a great b.g. picker named Doyle Lawson, the
other is a 1956 Gibson A-40 (short neck), and the last is a mandolin I built in 1984… It's the same F-5 style
as the Gibson. I had a friend that was a luthier who taught me how to build it…the only one I've built…..
It's made out of curly birdseye maple sides and back, with a Spruce top that I got from Martin Guitars. This
Spruce was 80 years old at the time.. Now it has that good "woody" sound to it, and a nice chop…..
It was quite a challenge, but I really learned something, and enjoyed building it, too. This was way before I
built my first shop, so I had to use his equipment, but he died a year afterwards, so I never built another
one. I took it to Nashville where I had a good friend who work for Gibson Guitars, and he put a sunburst
finish on it….beautiful job… I thought about doing a blog on it, but never have…You do nice, clean work..
