Loft Bed

I built this loft bed for our 14 year old. It is made from ½” and ¾” MDF and poplar. The drawer boxes are made using ½” birch ply with ¾” MDF applied fronts. There are 6 drawers open to the front, 3 open on the left end and 2 pencil drawers in the desk portion. The desk portion also includes a concealed 4-outlet power strip.

I used knock down hardware to make moving it possible but I built the proverbial boat in a basement. The main dresser is 27” wide, 42” deep and 60” tall. It would not fit through a 30” door since I didn’t consider the hall way was only 36” wide!! After many constructive suggestions from my better half, I removed the pre-hung door jamb allowing just enough clearance.

I like it. I also like how the wife is always quick to offer completely unsolicited suggestions.

Looks nice. I did the same thing with a corner cabinet one time. Never took into consideration that widening the body would increase the depth more than a standard door. Took the door off of the hinges and had about 1/16th to spare!
