quick win - Lego Saturn V shelves

Built this Lego Saturn V with my 3yo boy and my pops, it was a memorable experience. And the model is super awesome. I was having a tough time with some joinery in another project I’m working on and just needed a quick win so I took a break and cranked these out in a few days.

The shelves are reclaimed oak from an old entertainment center – just shaved off the old finish on the table saw, cut to length, width, and height, then mitered. I pre-finished by taping off the miters then came back and glued the joints and shot a single brad nail in each. The “panel” is just from a sheet of acrylic I had laying around and cut on the table saw.

I couldn’t decide between Golden Oak and Ipswich Pine for a stain – went with the latter since the color appeared more saturated and my trimwork in here is really orange-y. Came out pretty close, maybe a little more brown than everything else, but I’m happy with it. Finished with only 2 coats of wipe-on poly because my house is cold and I was impatient!

After I assembled everything I used finishing screws – 2 into the cabinets and 1 into a drywall anchor. I checked the depth for the pocket door and it clears no problem.

lol, guys, this is not worth top 3 of the day. The model is awesome; the shelves are simple and amateur. There are so many other, better projects on here right now.

Thanks though!

Now to figure out what to do with the extra one I made…

Have your say...
