This is one that I made for a friends birthday. I usually do not use any stain on my projects, but his wife is the one buying this one. Being 40×23, it would have been very expensive if I did it out of the wood I usually use. So I made an exception for them. They have a new patio and she wanted something to put out there for her husband on his birthday. It was made out of poplar and stained with different colors and I used a pine back ground. One interesting thing I found on this project was she wanted to the background to look weathered. I researched it and if you get white vinegar and put some still wool in it for a couple of days. After that mix the same amount of water as you used vinegar to put on your wood. Adjust the tint with more water if needed. It is hard to tell from the pics, but it really worked great. By the way their last name starts with an R (her idea that really turned out nice).

What a fun looking sign. It is interesting to see intarsia with some color stain on it. I know that using the stains is not a purist’s technique but I really like it with all that bold color.
