Hockey Shelf with CNC'd Lithopane

So, I used to play a lot of hockey before life started to get in the way. Once you start paying a mortgage and having kids you have to let some stuff go. I came across a few of my hockey sticks the other day so I cut two of them up and make a novelty shelf for my son’s room. There’s really not much to it and it didn’t take much time but he loves it and that makes dad smile. The Islanders symbols is 1/4” Corian that I carved with my cnc router (see my projects). When you back light a lithopane they glow as you can see in the last picture. I used a blue LED night light in spirit of the Islanders colors. The shelf also doubles as his new night light too.

The assembly was pretty much gluing the pieces of the sticks together with 3/4” oak spacers in between. After that I cut a chamfer on the sides and applied 4 coats of clear lacquer. I used double sided foam tape to secure the plexi top.

The shelf is 16” wide and 5” deep. The lithopane is 5”x7”.

Here is a short video of the cnc cutting the lithopane:

Thanks for looking!

That is way super-cool! What a great idea! -was it painful cutting them up?

That’s cool. I still have my stick from my playing days. I’m not sure if I can put a saw to it. I love the led lighting. Go Bruins!

Oh this is way cool…..other than the Islanders thing:)
I hear you about life getting in the way, that and a bad back.
I live through my 9 yr old playing goalie now…so great to be back in rinks at 6am on weekends

Sweet – love hockey stuff – check out my Toronto Maple Leafs Plaque and Coffee Table. Also have used blue LED strip-lighting extensively in signs and a bar and stereo stand I made – love the effect.
Good work!

If you’re on Facebook check out my business page Firewerx Machining and Fabrication. Check this out for usage of blue LED lightstrips from Acolyte Industries – great people.
