I found a supply of burl scraps from a local furniture maker, and snapped ‘em up. The spousal unit snagged a few of them, but I’ve found a new hiding place—the rest are mine until she finds them.
The body of this box is made of (I think) a maple burl. The top and bottom are sapele. The top is held on by rare-earth magnets.
The quilted figuring in the burl makes it almost appear to be a block of ribboned caramel—but that’s an illusion, it tastes just like wood. I like the way the sapele complements the body, with ribbons of gold running the length of the box when it catches the light.

That is some beautiful wood and you did it justice. Nice job, but send me the address of that “scrap” pile, I think I need to drop by and see what else they’ve got .
