This is another older project from last year (I am still getting caught up with the posting).
I bought the Manzanita burl at a lumber store which specializes in hardwoods and exotic stuff. I bandsawed the sides and bottom square, cut the top off, and simply drilled out the inside with a forstner bit. A thin disk made from a scrap of Padauk is glued to the underside of the lid to keep it snuggly in place. A little epoxy was injected here and there to keep it from falling apart with all the cracks/voids. I gave it to my grandma and she keeps potpourri in it (since it allows the scent to escape). Oiled.

Burl from what ? Maple ? Ash ? The Burl Plant ? HaHaHa, NOT. Definately something worth remembering ….... and it make’z Burl-Hunting a priority, right after looking for bent/hurt “cane” tree’z …... and farm wire twistie tree’z ….. I’ll have to post a picture of that one collected by my GrandFather ….. just a tree that twisted or look’z like it did because of ? post and nail or ? Who care’z ? I love your Burl——Box-of-Love ….. imagine if it could be a Legal-Tender Box for the OLD Family Doktor ….... not anymore …... USDA 1942 WW2 movie “Hemp for Victory” is now 3,000% percent profit-ratio NYLON for Columbus …. he wisheszzz … that would PLEAZE the Queen …...

Another beaut. I like that each box you make you seem to approach with completely different design, joinery, etc. Always creatively. Thanks for the post.

Nice! On jimmi jams like this if you drill the hole slightly off center and orient the index piece off center as well the lid will always have to be placed on correctly or else it will look weird. Keeps the grain/features aligned.

Hi Blake,
You posted this before I came on board but I am glad it came back up on my list. Before I joined this group I would have seen just a lump of firewood here. But I have come to appreciate the beauty that is present in these “less than perfect” pieces of wood. You did a nice job on this box. I am sure that your grandmother loves it. (To tell the truth though, if she is anything like mine was, you could give her a rock and she would have something positive to say about it).
Thanks for the post.
