Well, here she be: a napkin holder with a dolphin design. First I have to say that although I love dolphins I don’t have a single dolphin element in any part of my home. Why a dolphin, then, you ask? Because that was the pattern that I found that I thought I could handle!

I used my new scrollsawing skills and a little woodburning to create this work of wonder.
there were several glitches with attaching the panels to the base:
1) the router saw/table did this and did that and I just didn’t trust it
2) the Dremel router table that I bought (feeling comfortable with the little tools) didn’t fit the Dremel that I own

and so Rick cut out the grooves using the mitre saw.

I added a non-toxic oil finish to it, since I was polishing up my wooden spoon and had the oil and rags handy.
And now the handcrafted napkin holder sits on my table, saying “Hello, I am finally here!”

Real neat job, keep at it, & you’ll gradually lose the fear, but keeping safety in mind. It won’t be long, & you’ll be taking on bigger things, & buying bigger tools.

Hi Debbie;
—-ah, the growth of the woodworker is just like those ‘exogens of wood’! Great wood art!

“Exogens, the name for the order of plants whose stem is formed by successive accretions to the outside of the wood under the bark.” Definition taken from The Nuttall Encyclopædia, edited by the Reverend James Wood (1907)

Keep those woodchips curling.
Frank

Great artwork in wood. I like these, can you make ones with Manatees on them? I agree with Dick C. (above) bigger and better tools are needed for you. You need to make something big and make a big statement!
