Box for leather working tools - a trade

Two recent purchases of an inshave and a one-handed scorp came without guards. One of my friends is starting into leather working and I proposed a trade. Her tools were in a old box all jumbled up, so I offered to make her a custom toolbox. In return, she is making me two leather guards.

The wood is live edge black walnut and the remenents of the cherry I had left over from my meditation bench (which was a live edge bench matched with ball and claw legs in a modern and 18th century mishmash). The bottom is shiplap and brings the cherry across to meet with the other side. There are some brass nails in the build for the tray, but they were used essentially as brad nails to hold it together during glueing. They are sanded down so the head of the nail was removed. This matched the brass showing through on the top where the screw for the hinge come through and were sanded down. The original plan (in my head), called for individual bins for each tool, but that seemed possible only for the tray and we started construction on the house. My shop is out of comission for a while so… the box was done :). All done with hand tools and dimensioned by hand. The black walnut was 2S and the cherry had been previously flattened on one side.

Oh, and when you drop the (empty) till in, it floats down – I love that.

Somebody recently posted a box with the same hinges. This is the third time I have used them. They are terrible to install and require a huge amount of fiddling. BUT I must say I love the finished product. Still, the install is super painfull (even with power tools which I wasn’t using).

This is a beautiful box and it makes a wonderful container for that fine set of leather working tools.
