Project Information

Made this really quick with some clean and figured spalted maple and thin stock padauk. Mitered the corners, used one 5mm domino in each corner. Quite a few things that went wrong. Sanded it very poorly one time and that caused issues everywhere. The brass is all from Brusso which the wood whisperer advertised once. The hardware is amazing. Very clean lines, quality hardware, precise sizing. If you're worried about your hinges being nice when you order them, these did meet and exceed. I digress. I had to use filler or epoxy in a couple spots. I cut the groove too wide in the top so there's 3 set screws holding the lid boards tight. Just look like symmetrical bug or rot holes.

Still happy with it

Jim, you might have had a few minor problems along the way. Your box is really beautiful. The spalted maple, what an amazing beautiful wood and the contrast with the padauk, just wonderful. You done good for your Dad.

Beautiful work James. Any Dad would be bursting with pride to receive such a gift.

Though Ive never worked with it, I love the look of the spalted maple. Does it present any unique challenges?

I appreciate your candor, it helps to know that others are experiencing challenges. Perhaps our most important tool is the ability to improvise, adapt and overcome!

It was very easy to cut and work. The challenge was getting it right the first time (I didn't) so you don't lose grain and figure continuity. I had to cut off 3/32 twice when the mortises didn't go to plan.

Well, despite the mayhem building it, this box came out very well! I like the spalting in the maple-very striking! I'm sure your dad will love it!
