Seems like I’ve been making a lot of games lately. My wife is a librarian at a local school and has “game day” on Fridays. The catch is that you can only play any given game with someone that you don’t normally “hang out with”. She’s trying to get the kids to interact with one another Maybe learn something about that kid that no one talks to a lot. Maybe he/she isn’t that weird after all…

She brought the Coin Drop game a couple of weeks ago and it was a hit so she asked if I knew of any more to make. I had seen the Steve Ramsey version of Shut the Box, along with several others here, and decided to give it a go.

This one is made from Cherry and Sapele. The sides have Sapele splines. The top panel is a scrap piece of 1/4” oak ply from the big box with a 5/8” inlay of Sapele. The bottom panel is another scrap of 1/4” birch ply. The numbers are peel and stick. I made the dice out of some curly maple and burned the dots. I sealed it with Shellac and then sprayed it with semi-gloss lacquer.

I added some magnets to keep the top pulled shut. They hold it closed but not so hard that you have to fight it to open it. I also cut a bevel in the separation of the top and bottom for an area to get your fingers in to open it.

We’ll have to see how this one goes on the next game day.

Thats a fun game, you did a beautiful job building it. You and your wife should enjoy such a finely crafted game together before you let the kids get ahold of it. After all, it’s so nice to enjoy what you build with the one you love.

This is a fun game to build and to play. You did great on it. I really like the way the grain flows on the number tiles.

Super classy and well done. I really like how the grain extends across the number tabs. Great job.

These games are very popular. You did a great job on yours. Don’t be surprised if you get requests to make more.

Nice job on the game. I like how you have the grain flow through all the numbers. It is a fun game to play.
